In remembrance of John Gordon, 1928-2019.
For more than 65 years, John Gordon served as a steadfast and servant leader of his family’s business, passionately committed to the needs of both customers and employees. John, along with his brother, Paul Gordon, were instrumental in pioneering innovations that transformed their family’s business from a small, regional grocery supplier into a multi-billion dollar, multi-national leader in foodservice distribution. It was not uncommon to see John in the office almost daily, as his unwavering passion for his family’s business remained a central part of his life.
John humbly and devoutly believed that God’s grace was his greatest reward and held his faith most precious, followed closely by his deep love for his immediate and extended family, including the people of Gordon Food Service.
Friends and family are invited to share their remembrances of John.
John Gordon, Sr., Vice Chairman Emeritus of Gordon Food Service, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at home, following a battle with Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy, son John, Jr. (Amy) and daughter Sue Rollo, seven grandchildren: David, Katie, and Will Gordon; Michael, Melissa, Nicole, and Jennifer Rollo; and one great-grandson, Mateo Rollo. John is also survived by his sister Lois (Bill) Lanning, and sisters-in-law Beth and Dottie Gordon, Pam Schmidt, and Marge McGehee. John was preceded by his brothers, Paul (d. 2008) and Phil (d. 2013).
For more than 65 years, John served as a strong and caring leader of his family’s business, passionately committed to the needs and interests of its customers and employees. Working in close partnership with his brother, Paul Gordon, they were instrumental in pioneering innovations that transformed their family’s small, regional grocery supplier into a multi-billion dollar, multi-national leader in foodservice distribution, with more than 20,000 employees across the U.S. and Canada. John’s unwavering commitment to serving his family’s business remained a central part of his life into his 90s, as he continued to come into his office almost daily.
Born April 29, 1928, the third son of Ben and Ruth Gordon, John’s passion for boating and his reputation as a sailor were established in his youth, an early display of the joyful energy that would characterize his life. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Following college and service in the U.S. Army, John joined Gordon Food Service in 1953, beginning his hands-on immersion in virtually every aspect of the business, including sales, purchasing, and operations. He was named the company’s Secretary and Treasurer in 1965, and went on to champion the company’s pioneering Employee Profit Sharing Plan. John became Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1991. Without the four decades of powerful, visionary leadership provided in partnership with his brother Paul, the company would not have achieved its remarkable record of growth and industry-changing innovations.
In addition to the love and respect of his family, friends, and the people of Gordon Food Service, John was recognized for his business achievements with the Ernst & Young West Michigan Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2004. He also proudly served on the board of the Porter Hills Foundation and the Alma College President’s Advisory Council. John also served as a deacon and an elder of Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
John humbly and devoutly believed that God’s grace was his greatest reward and held his faith most precious, followed closely by his deep love for his immediate and extended family, including the people of Gordon Food Service. Together they now celebrate his life and lasting impact on so many—and the greater reward that awaits him.Relatives, friends, and Gordon Food Service employees are invited to greet the family. Visitation will be Thursday, April 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Calvary Church, at East Beltline and I-96. A service to remember and honor John will be held at Calvary Church, on Friday, April 12, at 11:00 a.m. in the main auditorium. For those interested in a living memorial in honor of John, we encourage you to consider a gift to D.A. Blodgett – St. John’s, Forgotten Man Ministries, or Mel Trotter Ministries. Arrangements by Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Services.
The session of Eastminster Presbyterian Church offers our condolences for your loss and are grateful for John’s service to our church.

I am honored to be a partner with Gordon’s with a man like John being the rudder of the massive GFS ship.
May the love of God that filled John’s heart surround the family and all those who are saddened by his passing. May his love and passion for Gordon’s continue to guide GFS in the years to come.

Please accept my condolences. I have a memory of seeing John and Nancy at a local diner, Real Food Cafe. My wife and I go to that customer for brunch after Sunday mass. I saw John and I went up to introduce myself and say “hello”. He and Nancy were both so kind and friendly to us. I remember feeling both a sense of pride that one of our leaders was supporting our customer and that he was just a nice, “regular” gent. Every time we eat at that place, I think about John when I pass that booth.

The quiet giant in the industry. I had the pleasure of working and reporting to John SR for five years in Multi-Unit. I learned so much and found that he and Paul were perfect leaders together, John was the quieter, but make no mistake, John always had his finger on the pulse of GFS! RIP as you walk with The Master on the streets of Gold beside the Crystal Sea

My restaurant is a 25 year GFS customer. We have grown from one to four through the blessings of GFS and the Gordon family. I did not know John well, but can only imagine his strong connection to his Faith as I’ve read the posts below.
My very first GFS show I was bussed to Grand Rapids. I was very new to the industry and scared to death. I sat with a very experienced operator who calmed me down and helped me navigate some tough problems we were facing.
When we got to the Amway Grand, Paul Gordon got on our bus, shook hands with everyone, asked our names and wanted to know a little about our operations. When we left, he again boarded our our bus, called us each by our first name and asked each of us a very personal question about our businesses. He had actually LISTENED to us in that first encounter.
Paul said GFS was looking for Customers for Life. 25 years later here I still am. I have heard the legendary stories of annual meetings and the working of the Gordon family Faith into their company and daily living.
Amazing company, amazing people, God-inspired daily living. God Bless all of GFS through the seeds planted by these wonderful men.

A few years back I was having lunch with one of the business professors that I had back when I was in college. During the conversation, my professor began telling about a wedding he attended a few weeks earlier. At the wedding, he said he saw an older gentleman sitting by himself, so he went over and started a conversation. My professor asked the gentleman where he worked and he said Gordon Food Service. My professor then asked him his name since he knew quite a few Hope College graduates working at GFS. The gentleman said his name was John Gordon Sr. As my professor was telling me this story, he also talked about he was struck with humility in his conveying he was simply an employee at Gordon Food Service and the passion that John conveyed about GFS to him as their conversation continued.
This story has always stuck with me and I wanted to share it as a tribute.
Prayers to the entire family and may John rest in peace.
Derek Torno, April 14, 2019
Our prayers go out to the Gordon family.
I can not say how much we appreciate all John and the Gordon family has done for us and how the family practiced servant leadership. We will miss him.
Dennis Goossens, April 14, 2019
My heart and prayers go out to everyone in the Gordon family. I never had the pleasure of meeting John but I have had the pleasure of working for Gordon Food Service for the past 12 years and I can honestly say that after being in the work force for over 45 years, “It is the best company I have ever worked for.”
The way they treat their employees, customers, vendors and community responsibility, should be a template for every business.
Go with God John.

May his Soul Rest In Peace.
Great man .
Dia Francis / Wyndham Garden Hotel – Romulus MI, April 13, 2019
I worked at Gordon’s foodservice in the marketplace store right across the street from the old office for 6 years. He was so charming to the customers as well those that worked there. No matter how high or low in the rankings he humbly made EVERYONE feel special and important. Paul was exactly the same way. They both would walk in the store and it lit up the place . They were so humble and you could instantly notice they were servants of God. I ended up moving up to the corporate office. I didn’t see him so much there but will never forget how John and Paul treated everyone. So sad he passed but I know where he is along with his brother in heaven 😇😇
Jill Calton, April 13, 2019
My condolences to the entire Gordon family. John and his family built a wonderful company with integrity and compassion. He leaves a lasting legacy. My prayers are with all of you.
Jodi Mercer, ESG, April 13, 2019
I feel so sad but, also, so blessed to have known John and the entire Gordon family. He always made me feel like family throughout my long career with such an amazing company.
I remember working one of my last food shows, talking to John with the Cheese Guys about Limburger Cheese. I thought my mom was the only person that loved it…..he also loved it!!
The last time I talked to him, he called me from Florida after I retired, I hung up on him, then called him back when I found out it really was him. He wondered why I quit, and I told him I retired. So thankful I had that special opportunity to thank him for allowing me to work for Gordon family and treating me like family. What a great leader & friend.
My heart goes out to all the Gordon family.

One of my fondest memories is from when I had only been at GFS for a few years. I was standing in a long line at the post office. When I turned the corner I noticed John standing a few places behind me. Dressed in his bibs and deck shoes you would have never known who he really was. He greeted me by name and treated me like a long lost friend. What impressed me most was that he was just standing in line with a couple dozen others, waiting to buy stamps. Just a normal guy. Nothing pretentious, no flash, just John.
We will miss you Mr. Gordon.
Be at peace.
James Coleman, April 12, 2019
This leaves everyone with a heavy heart. We became part of Gordon Food Service in 2000, when then Neptune Foodservice was acquired. We are all grateful to John and the family for having the courage and belief in the Neptune team to become part of the Gordon Food Service family. Rest in Peace knowing that your leadership has been well woven into the culture of this great organization.
Joseph Lavoie, Fresh Start Foods, Vancouver, April 12, 2019
We all think about the legacy we will leave when we pass. John was not just a great leader, but he left the world a better place by living it with dignity and gracefulness. I did not know John but had the opportunity to shake his hands a few times. But I did know about his legacy. And I am sure it will continue with the family and company.
Andrew Conger, April 12, 2019
My husband retired from GFS in 2009, we only had the opportunity to speak with John Gordon once, at one of the Christmas parties. Mr. Gordon was one of the most humble men I have ever had the privilege to meet.. I am so sorry for your loss, my prayers are with the family and others..
Mary Lewis, April 12, 2019
So Sorry for your loss! May God Bless and Keep your family at this time.
Dave LaForge Abbvie AP30, April 12, 2019
John seemed to be a great servant leader.
I never had the privilege to work directly with John, but he seemed to be a strong man in the sense that he was content to be Paul’s right hand man. Many companies/families are torn apart by the thought of one family member placing themselves under the leadership another. Most companies can’t make it past 2 generations because of family squabbles over everyone’s “rights”. Because of the kind hearts in the Gordon family they seem to be able to put their pride aside to do what is right to keep the company working at a high level. To me that is a great example of servant leadership. It has been a privilege to work at GFS for 28 years with Paul and John and then their kids leading the way.

Your laughter, joy, and legacy to our lives are the memories I will treasure most about you. Thank you for investing your life into our livelihood. Traveling with you and Nancy, along with the others, to BVI, celebrating your 86th on that trip, and the friendship you both extended were truly great memories, I will never forget. It’s your legacy that allows us to do what we do and we are forever grateful! I can’t wait to hear you laugh again when I get to the other side. You are in our hearts and you will be missed.
Jill Noffsinger-Day, April 12, 2019
It was the day after Paul Gordon’s funeral that my husband and I went on the Person of the Year trip to Alaska. We were really worried that the trip wasn’t going to be what we expected because of Paul’s passing. However the day after we arrived we went on our first excursion to a gold mine and when we got back to the hotel the driver asked us to stay on the bus for a minute. A few minutes later John Gordon and Dave Grey boarded the bus. John told us that he knew we were all thinking of Paul and he wanted this trip to be a great trip. He said that he wasn’t Paul and didn’t remember names like he did but he was going to make sure we all had a great time and he knew Paul wouldn’t want us to dwell his passing. We boarded a train the next day and he and Nancy sat up on the second floor and each couple went up to spend time with them while we traveled. It truly ended up being the best trip to date for me and it was awesome spending time with him. He will be missed.

Please accept my condolences on the passing of John. I did not have an opportunity to meet him, but for many years I have benefitted from his vision to provide excellent food service to his customers. I have been involved in Christian Camping in British Columbia for 35 years. GFS has supplied food and much more at the last two camps I have managed (Young Life’s RockRidge Canyon in Princeton and now Camp Homewood on Quadra Island). Quadra Island is a small island off the coast of Vancouver Island. It is a great blessing to have a world class partner to provide for the needs of our campers throughout the year. The GFS staff are great to work with, and our rep always gives a cheque to help financially disadvantaged children attend camp so we can share the gospel with them. I know all of these things are a representation of the values of John and the entire Gordon family. May God bless you in this time of grief, and may you be comforted by your faith in Jesus.
Paul Bailey, April 12, 2019
I’m so grateful for the years that I was with the company that he worked so hard with Paul and others to build. How wonderful that his goal in life was to serve God, his dear family, and the people he worked with. What a great legacy he has left for us all! I pray that God will give the family all the strength and hope they need during this difficult time.

John’s faith, servant leadership, mentoring guidance continues to bless our family to this day with the lessons that Paul and John taught us. The foundation that they laid and the examples of Stewardship they led with everyday touched us all and live on each day for us. Thank you John for all you taught us with your Servant Leadership.

I had the Honor and pleasure of having John ride with me my first year on the job (yes I was a little nervous). It was just fascinating and almost unbelievable to me that John Gordon would come to Traverse City and jump in the car with me to visit customers. A true testament to a Great man of humility and honor. A life well lived. My heart goes out to the Gordon family.

This morning on my drive into the office the idea of the “ripple effect” came to mind as I thought about John Sr’s legacy. The amount of ripples he has enabled, some he may have witnessed firsthand, yet likely most he’ll never know. Thank you John Sr for everything you poured into this company, the people, and your life that caused so many blessing ripples for others.

I knew John Gordon by the Legacy he and his brother Paul created within GFS. I quickly understood it to be a multi generational approach to leading a good life and how to do business. When looking for the right succession plan for my family business I was blessed to be introduced to Gordon. Lynne and I instantly knew this was the place for my family and our employees for generations to come. Thank you John Gordon.

I had the opportunity to be interviewed by John and Paul along with my wife Sharon in October 1981. I loved that they thought enough of Sharon to give me an opportunity to serve alongside the Gordon Food Service family for 35 years. We were truly blessed to have John lead this amazing company all these years. A true servant and man of God. Well done, good and faithful servant. Prayers to the entire family.

In Key West, Florida, GFS operates an outlet open to the general public. Without it, the local citizenry would simply not be able to afford quality food products. As tourists there in 2010, my wife and I loved shopping there and still smile whenever we see a GFS truck in our hometown of Calgary, Alberta. We knew whomever “Gordon” was, he had to be a good person to keep such an important and decent business operating in a needful community.
God bless you.

I always try to thank the Gordon Family members when I see them at the Annual Meeting. I was always struck by John’s sense of humor and the humility with which he always turned the thanks back to his Savior.
John and Paul were strong leaders who walked the talk of the Cornerstone Values and the Gordon Philosophy that they created so many years ago. I am proud to work for this company and the integrity they instilled in this company that still lives here today, backed by their strong faith. I was always so glad to see John come into the office and happy I had a chance to say hi and see him just recently.
My family will keep John Jr., Nancy and the whole Gordon family in our prayers during this difficult time.

Fortunate to have started with this company as early as I did, to have been able to experience the family of Gordon Food Service. John and Paul had their office’s just down the hall from where I worked so passing by them daily was an everyday occurrence. Thank you for giving me the opportunity for work with this company. Paul Blagoslov and family, April 10, 2019
My favorite memory of John was as a new GFS sales rep 26 years ago in Saugatuck Michigan where John and Nancy kept their boat during the summer months. On numerous occasions, I would come into the office Monday morning with a Sysco sugar packet stapled to my cubicle with a simple note: “Todd, we need to get this business” ( the sugar packet would have a restaurant’s name on it). John taught me so much early in my career, on how to build strong customer relationships, the importance of driving results, but also how to celebrate the wins! He would be the first person to send me a note congratulating me on acquiring a new customer or just to celebrate gaining the sugar packet business. Thank you for your incredible leadership and all the great memories. My condolences to the Gordon family.
Todd Baker, April 10, 2019
I read with great interest the many many tributes to this great man and I am in awe of his kindness and exemplary leadership so many people commented on. My deepest condolences to the Gordon Family.

Kris Dobyns, April 10, 2019
I was able to meet John in the early days of my GFS career as a sales serviceman but really got to know him well during the years we opened the Brighton Distribution Center.
There were many times during those very difficult years that John’s infectious smile and words of encouragement were all the help I needed to carry on.
I never doubted his care and concern for all of us that were “The GFS Family”.
Since my retirement I have not seen John but still thought of him often. My life is been enriched by knowing him and we have certainly lost a legend.
I know where he now resides and I know I will see him again one day in the presence of our Lord and Savior.
Dan Cutting, April 10, 2019
I am fortunate to be able to work with various members of the Gordon family on special projects. For many years that included John. He was always so kind and accommodating with the requests that our team would make of him.
Also, I had a terrible accident many years ago and while in the hospital I was delivered a hand written letter from John indicating his hopes and prayers for my full recovery. I can’t tell you how encouraging that was for my wife and I. It was like the whole company was wishing for me to overcome my injuries. I have won several awards at Gordon Food Service over my 20+ years with the company and that letter will always be the most prized possession I was given during my time here. I hold it very dear. I want John’s family to know how much I appreciate his being a wise, gracious, humble and generous leader within our company during his lifetime.

Very inspiring to run into John occasionally on the third floor (last time a few short weeks ago). He was in his office early and always took his time on the way out to talk with anyone who approached him (which was everyone!). A true Servant Leader who set the example for the rest of us. Best memory was last April when every home office employee sang him Happy Birthday in the connector for his 90th. It was just an amazing sight! Thanks John for all you’ve done for us and the generations that follow. We’ll uphold your honor and legacy. Deepest sympathies to the Gordon Family and those employees who were closest to him.

My favorite memory of John Gordon was the day I was returning to the office after running an errand. I was attempting to hold the box I was carrying upright and open the door, he said, “Let me get that for you”. I thanked him and said I had a turtle in box. He asked if I was making soup. When I explained that it was a live turtle for my sons birthday and said “Oh you better not do that then !!” We both laughed ♥

I had the pleasure of meeting John Sr. and he had a very warm spirit. His humbleness and grace was shown in his daily interactions. This was true even when he was not feeling 100 percent. James T Koukios, April 10, 2019
One of my best memories of John Gordon is the first time I met him. Many of us were sitting on a tour bus in Fairbanks, Alaska in 2008 on a Gordon’s sponsored trip. John was supposed to be there with us the day before, but had to delay due, coincidentally, to Paul’s passing the previous week. To our delight and surprise, he climbs on the bus, humbly apologizes for “being late,” and begs for our understanding of everything he had going on – albeit unnecessarily. He gave a few words about his brother, and finished by reminding us that Paul could remember the names of everyone he met, but says “In my case, the good Lord did not bless me with that gift, so as I call out your name, come up to the front!” Everyone laughed! I’m not even sure he meant it to be funny, but John had a natural geniality that made him impossible not to like and want to be around. John was a humorous, humble leader, and I will miss seeing his smile and shaking his hand at our food shows.
They say a person dies twice. Once when they die, and the second time when someone speaks their name for the last time. I have a feeling the name John Gordon Sr. will be around for many years to come. God Bless the Gordon family!

I am a third generation Gordon Food Service employee. When I started here just out of high school, one of my jobs was to deliver the mail to employees in the 333 building. We all knew that John wanted his Wall Street Journal as soon as we had it. I was a little intimated to walk into John’s office and leave the paper but he always greeted me with a smile and if he had the time would ask how my grandfather was doing. He will be missed.

I was lucky enough to meet John & Nancy in Montreal, July of 2005 at the Person of the Year trip. They were both wonderful and so full of life. At 77 (then) John was joined my sister and I on a number of the rides including ‘LE MONSTER’ Canada’s largest wooden roller coaster at the LaRonde. Such a great memory. John, you will be missed!
Leanne Cairns, Ontario, April 10, 2019
What an honor to say I knew John. During my time working at GFS, it was such a blessing to do some projects for him and to be hosted by him and Nancy on their sailboat for a People of the Year Trip in 1994. What a joy they were and such awesome memories of so many smiles shared! Will treasure those memories of him, his hospitality, his generosity and his laugh, forever.
God bless you, Nancy, and all the Gordon family. You are in our prayers. ❤️
Phyllis DeVos, April 10, 2019
I will always remember him passing out candy at Halloween at the Home Office. It meant a lot that he took the time to do that. One year, my daughter wanted two pieces and I told her to only take one. He then slipped her one under the table 🙂

As a newer employee back in 1988 John walked up while I was selecting cases in the Brighton Warehouse on level one in Module 4 and introduced himself to me with a warm handshake and smile. I in return introduced myself and he promptly asked me if I had a relative by the name of Bud. I replied yes I did he’s my Great Uncle from up north. John said well that’s nice to know because Bud and I belong to the same hunting club. As years went by being able to say Hi at the annual meetings was special and I always reminded my wife Leslie that John used to hunt with my Dad’s Uncle Bud. Thanks John for your interest in each of us here at Gordon Foods. Our prayers go out to your entire lovely Family.

I was a customer of the Gordon family in 1984 and then an Employee in 1989 and back to a customer since 1996 and throughout both experiences, spanning 35 years associated with this company I am so happy (in the words of Paul) I hitched my wagon to theirs. Nothing but the highest regards for John Gordon and the entire family. My Family, my business and my life have been molded from many who have come before me. God Bless the Gordon family.

It was always great to see John at the office. He would take the time to say hi. I feel blessed to have seen him a few weeks ago.
Although business was important, fun was important too. That’s why one of my favorite “legacies” from John and Paul are the funny Annual Meeting videos. I had a chance to view a few of them recently. My favorite video was GFS Rockband. Seeing John walk into Dan’s office wearing jeans, a T-shirt, and winter hat, saying things like “G-dizzle” and “OMG” while texting had me LOL’ing at my desk. It was great to see John have some fun – especially during the blooper reel 😂
Heaven gained a great man this week. Although John will be missed here on Earth, there is the assurance that we will see him again. My prayers go out to his friends and family.
Danielle Desjarlais – GFS Home Office, April 9, 2019

Our family also lost a father recently. We are comforted by the knowledge that “… in life and death we belong to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ”. Our sympathies to the Gordon Family.

I had the opportunity early in my career to have John and Nancy stop into the store I ran. John took the time on his vacation to share with me his passion for the profit sharing plan and his sincere desire that I engage in it. I found it interesting that this was the item he chose to talk with me about. He was so passionate about helping his people. Because of this I felt it became part of my job to discuss with everyone that worked for me about his passion. I can only thank John and the Gordon Family for the influence that have all had on me, my family, and my life.
I pray the family finds Peace in the fact that John won the “Race of Life!”

Well done, Well done good and faithful son comes to mind when I think of John. Truly a man that has ment so much to me. Many fun times sharing hunting stories, Gator rides as we where building the Home Office. He was the chief building inspector and always wanted to know just what was happening. He would just shake his head and wondered what his brother Paul would be thinking about this large building. He was a great role model to follow and Boy am I gonna miss him. John Thanks for the memories and I can’t wait till we meet again.

We have lost a shining example of what it means to be a Christian Servant Leader. So many of us have benefited from watching how John conducted himself.
John and Nancy were always so gracious and welcoming. They treated everyone at GFS as family.
Having had the opportunity to interact with John on a business level, three thing we’re certain:
You always knew where you stood
with John.
You always knew that John had
your back.
You always knew that John cared
deeply for you AND your family.
May you rest in eternal peace in the company of Our Lord and Savior.
Paul and Deb LaLonde, April 9, 2019
John Gordon was an inspiration.
Last Christmas, I was caroling with the GFS Carolers as we spread holiday cheer throughout the building. One of our last stops was the lobby, and as we were setting up, John Gordon was on his way out. He stopped to listen to us with a big smile on his face. It got me all teary-eyed, thinking what pride this man was probably feeling as he watched the employees working for the company he helped to build as they spread joy to the world.
It is an honor and a privilege to work for such a principled company with such solid cornerstone values that John Gordon helped formulate.
Chris Harrington, April 9, 2019
We have been business customers of GFS since 2005, and I can honestly say that after 14 yeras of business GFS is the only thing that has ran smoothly the entire time. When something did go wrong, they have always made it right. After reading about Mr. Gordon I now understand why. Thank you for setting the bar, and hope your staff stay on that path. RIP sir.

Something I shared with our group from Person of the Year, and would like for this to be shared with our GFS family.
I wanted to take a moment to say how thankful I am to the Gordon family, Rich and Kristen, and Dave and Char. Since the TX Division moved from Glazier Foods (family owned since 1936) to be a part of GFS 4 years ago, I have heard and learned about the Gordon philosophy and culture, and was ever so elated to be a part of it. But I don’t think I really KNEW what it meant until this week. I’ve noticed a pattern these past few days that I can relate to some of my pastor’s sermons as of late, as we are focusing on the #simplegospel Book of Mark for the better part of a year. What we as coworkers have seen here while sharing stories with each other (teachings/reflections), engaging in group activities (community groups), and meeting new friends/family (following in faith and love) it really blows me away on how much more our company is than what people see on the outside as a purveyor/supplier/distributor. We have something so unique and special with our passion and love for not only our customers, but for each other. I’m truly blessed to have met you all, foremost, and am lucky enough to have been blessed by His grace to work at a company who shares these core values that not only separate us from our competitors, but shows that though faith and works, we can accomplish anything we put not only our minds to, but our hearts as well. Bless you all and thank you again for this amazing reward and opportunity to meet our fellow partners. This has truly been an unbelievable and humbling experience.

Uncle John,
You will truely be remembered for how much you cared about the employees of Gordon Food Service, your family, and God’s Kingdom. I always respected how you and Uncle Paul worked through challenges in the organization and kept people at the priority in situations. The legacy that you’re leaving is one that has built a great family company and impacted individuals lives and generations you may have not even directly met. On a personal side, it was great to see how you watched a room in situations and see your smile. Thanks for giving so much each day to Gordon Food Service and representing Servant Leadership.

When I was helping with the development of both new and experienced leaders at GFS, one of the concepts that was integral to the success of the program was servant leadership. We taught from books and had developing leaders talk about the importance of being a servant, but these people really needed to look no further than John Gordon as the quintessential servant leader. I will miss seeing him here on earth, but look forward to the time of our heavenly meeting. Praying that the Gordon family feel God’s peace and consolation at this time.

In my early days at GFS I always looked forward to the Annual Meeting in Grand Rapids. John and Paul had a great chemistry between them as they gave the company update, announced our profit sharing results, and congratulated the Gold Club and Persons of the Year recipients on stage. It was always unforgettable. They started an on-going tradition of humorous annual meeting videos that has been carried on thru today. I know John was a tough and firm business person but he was also a person of compassion and love for all. He will be missed here on this earth, but is in a better place now.
Earl Biggs, April 9, 2019
My condolences to the Gordon family. What a wonderful example of true leadership. He lived those Cornerstone Values and set an example for all whom he came in contact with. I had 16 wonderful years at the Traverse City Food Service Store, I will always remember John Gordon coming in 4th of July weekend getting supplies for their time up at their cottage. Always nice to interact with and a humble man. GFS taught me a lot, about leadership through stewardship that I use today. Rest in peace John Gordon.
Scott Lindstrom, April 9, 2019
While interviewing for my current position, in June of 2018, I was waiting in the lobby for the interview to start. Mr. Gordon had just come into the office and the receptionist introduced us. He inquired about the position for which I was interviewing and we spoke for appx 10 minutes. He talked about the culture of GFS and how the company has evolved. He also decided to share with me that GFS had to stay innovative and continue to grow. I got pulled back for my interview and I thought it was great that he took the time to visit with me. Quite frankly that would have been enough, however, when I started, more than a month later I again saw him in the lobby on my first and he remembered my name and referred back to our conversation. He challenged me to come in and be the person that contributes to the company.
He was a great man and a great leader.

In high school while doing what seemed to be our normal family protocol of doing summer/winter break jobs here at GFS I was afraid to joke around with John as much as Paul since he would always intimidate me more being the young man I was. Washing his car, helping him move some items around in his house, walking by his office to visit my uncle, many conversations I had with him we would still have a laugh. He would still make fun of me or joke around every time if given the chance but his smile would eventually give it away which always made me feel like family. Being back with GFS again since starting my own family and the growth the company has seen I haven’t been able to see him as much. The many statements I’ve read so far reiterate how humble and Christ-centered his life was while on this earth. Truly an example to follow, my thoughts and prayers are with the family.

My husband would ask me why I was leaving for work so early in the morning. I would always answer him with I have to make sure I meet John on the elevator with my Starbucks so he can ask me what I was drinking!
I asked John “why do you come in every day?” His answer, “If you are here then I should be also.” True servant leadership at its finest.
His smile made you feel appreciated and motivated to love our company as the family does.
Forever blessed that 8 years ago I moved my family across the lake to be a part of the most amazing family ever!

Bill Hinksman, April 9, 2019
Day 1 of my career at Gordon Food Service, I walked into the 333 building to start my marketing internship with John Sr (by chance). I can still remember his white shirt, red tie combo with a briefcase in hand. As we parted ways upon entrance, I just remember thinking to myself, “I just walked in with an owner, and you would have no idea. Does he really come in everyday with his white shirt, red tie, and briefcase?” Turns out, he did, with extraordinary humility. My thoughts and prayers are with the Gordon family. John was an incredible example of Servant Leadership for us to learn from. Praise God for his impact on our company and families.
Adam Van Opstall, April 9, 2019
My dad was my guest for the Boston Winner’s Circle trip. We were waiting for the elevator and John Sr. was too. I felt like I was standing by a rock star! My heart was beating so fast! When we got in the elevator I introduced myself, and them to each other. I said, “Dad, this is Mr. Gordon.” John shook his hand and said, “I’m just John.”
Later that night at cocktail hour he and my dad were sitting at the same table. I said, “Dad are you kidding me? You sat at the Gordons’ table?” He said, “No, he sat with me.”
I loved his humility and friendliness. (And the way he played the drums in the rockstar video lol. )
Jill Louise Willhide, West Virginia CDS, April 9, 2019
I started with Gordon Food Service in the early 1990’s. We went to Grand Rapids for Product Emphasis for an entire week. Part of the agenda included having lunch with either Paul or John Gordon. I got to go to lunch with John. I will always remember when I got into his car and put my arm on the armrest it landed on a Bible. John said he always liked to have one close by. Now he and Paul are having lunch together. What a blessing he was to all of us.
Brad House, April 9, 2019
My fondest memory of John was on one of my first Winner’s Circle trips back in the 90’s. Kind, caring and competitive! I also loved all of the fun “Gordon” videos in the early part of my career where the family and team would do hilarious videos and poke fun at themselves. John not only lived our Cornerstone Values but as part of our leadership wove those values through the fabric of the company. Thank you for that. It’s allowed so many of us to have wonderful careers for which I’m grateful. A great Leader. A great loss. My condolences to the family.

Great man and gentle soul
John has left an everlasting impression on the Gordon Food Service Family that will continue to instill the values and philosophy the company thrives on today.
Peter St John, April 9, 2019
So many memories of John Sr from the duct tape leading to the senior offices to his tolerance of us spending so many resources to grow the Chicago market. From orientations to profit sharing dinners to innumerable meetings and conferences to teams working on specific challenges, John Sr would insert himself where he needed to to coach and prod for best results and would always be encouraging through even the most monotonous parts. John and Nancy were so hospitable to all that accompanied them on trips. It was remarkable and demonstrated their care for those who helped Gordon Food Service grow. In more recent years, John Sr always insisted on addressing Winner Circle dinner guests to tell them how important the effort was that got them there. Although it was typically a noisy and challenging environment to speak to all, he fought through because it was that important to him and to all in attendance. John Sr has been an amazing example of servant leadership and the things that seemed most important to him were often focused on how people could develop and share in the prosperity of Gordon Food Service. Thank you Gordon Family for sharing John Sr and all of your lives with us as if we were family for all of these years. We’ll always remember John Sr’s authenticity and generous laugh.
Larry Erickson, April 9, 2019

My husband had only been working at Gordon Food Service a few months, when we attended the annual Christmas party in 2004.
I was standing in the atrium while my husband checked our coats when I noticed an older gentleman who was also apparently waiting for someone. I said hello, and asked the man how he was enjoying his evening.
He kindly chatted with me, asking how long my husband had been employed at GFS, how old our children were, and what our plans were for the season. As we talked, there were two things I noticed. First, this man seemed to know everyone. As people arrived, he would raise a hand and call out things like, “So nice to see you!” and, “Glad you’re here!” Then each time, he would turn back to me.
I also noticed that although people were cheerfully returning his greetings, no one lingered to talk with him. In fact, there seemed to be an invisible ring around this man and me, which no one penetrated. The thing I didn’t notice, until well into our friendly exchange, was his nametag. I was talking to John Gordon.
When I realized, I quickly excused myself—my face quickly reddening—and went to join everyone else who was showing honor by not monopolizing the man putting on the party. Yet in retrospect, Mr. Gordon never made me feel anything but welcome.
This made such a lasting impression on me. Mr. Gordon was one of the most respected and influential business men in west Michigan. Yet his small kindness toward me (the wife of a new employee) only amplifies his greatness with humility. What an inspiring legacy.
Shannon Popkin, April 9, 2019
A special man and family. Our prayers are for the Gordon Family and the never ending legacy that John & Paul created as Gordon Food Service. Shanan Burress, April 9, 2019
At a Team of the Year trip in San Juan, I had the privilege of spending a day on a deep sea fishing boat with John and his lovely wife. The day was very hot and the ocean very still. For hours, not a single nibble. John was so apologetic and disappointed that his guests were not catching fish. He asked the captain rather gruffly, “where are the fish?” The captain looked at John and replied” Senor, I am pretty sure the fish are in the water.” After about five seconds, John broke into a smile and laughed loudly. After that we didn’t care about catching fish. We simply enjoyed listening to stories from John about his family, our company and his faith. I could not have asked for a better way to spend a day on the ocean. Rest in Peace, Mr. Gordon. You have earned it.

It was easy for John to become a mentor to not only me but hundreds of others. He was so organized you could not help but be in awe. Having worked away from the home office it was not uncommon to receive an inter office memo that just read “call me” JMG. Oh, how those made you cringe. I know John is in the glory of his Lord as he received his “see me” memo. Love and prayers to all Gordon Family

In my almost 38 years w/Gordon Food Service I have many great memories of John.
I am a non-food product specialist in Northern Michigan. A large customer I work with is the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. John would always check in with me to make sure everything was going well there as it pertained to my category.
John and Nancy had a very personal relationship w/the owner of the hotel and would spend every labor day weekend there.
One year, as a quiet thank you for our efforts there, he asked me if my wife Kelly and I would like to stay in their suite for that weekend. Denny Wilmer and his wife Jane joined us. We had a wonderful time.
Also blessed to have been on a trip hosted by John and Nancy where we shared many memories from over the years and a few beers.
Just a couple examples this special man and family, he will be missed.
May you rest in His peace John.
Ron Korson, April 9, 2019
What an incredible legacy he left. We rejoice for him as he can finally be face to face with his savior, yet we mourn with the family who will miss him dearly. We love you!

I offer my heartfelt condolences to the Gordon Family. It was an honor to have met Mr John and Mrs Nancy when they came to Quebec city in 2008, for the Canadian People of the Year trip. I will cherish these moments forever.
Carolyn Auclair, GFS Quebec, April 9, 2019
As a newer employee, I never got to meet Mr. Gordon, but the stories of him told to me about his tremendous legacy, his devotion to his employees and the Gordon family, his devotion to God – these are the reasons I came to GFS. Sending my deepest condolensces to all who knew and loved him.
Lori Grant, April 9, 2019
I did not know John personally. I met him at Winners Circle in Charleston, SC in 2016. He has made an impact on me through the servant leadership that he has created at Gordon Food Service. I went through the John and Paul videos during my training. I just could not believe how open John and Paul were about their faith in God, and how they wanted to please Him in the way they operated Gordon Food Service. I have had the pleasure of working alongside several ministries in Christian Camping, and have heard great stories of the impact that John has made through his servant heart.
Keith Biorkman, April 9, 2019
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his people.” Romans 8:28

My prayers and thoughts are with the Gordon family. He was a very generous and kind man.
I met John as a contract employee. He walked right up to me and introduced himself and asked if I liked working here. I said yes, and he told me to make sure I stayed. Six years later, I am lucky enough to be still be working here. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to be part of such a wonderful extended family and the GFS experience.

My wife and I were blessed to attend the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in February 2002. John and Nancy hosted. 5 months earlier our country was attacked on 911. Security was heightened beyond belief. We arrived at the gates for the Closing Ceremony. John had a Swiss Army knife in his pocket. I watched perhaps the greatest display of salesmanship, negotiating, and finally the “safe grandpa card” John used with Security. Yes, he brought his knife in. Rest in peace, John. So grateful for all you have done for us.
Gary and Grace Grossklaus, April 9, 2019
Our condolences to the Gordon Family, as we pray with you during this difficult time. I will forever remember his warm smile. John’s work ethic was always so inspiring.
Jon Peters, GFS 4/9/2019, April 9, 2019
Mackinac Island always has been a big part of GFS . The Grand Hotel always a great customer, whenever the Grand felt something wasn’t right with delivery(early 90’s) they called John Sr, he would immediately call me, first apologize for bothering me and always stated I know you will take care of their concern. I was always very humbled by my interactions with John, truly an amazing person and servant leader..
Duane Baldwin, April 9, 2019
My deepest condolences to the Gordon Family. John was truly an inspiration… dedicated to the organization and its people. I’ll miss seeing him around the office. He always had a contagious smile on his face, especially when handing out candy bars to little ones at our annual Harvest Festival! What a life well lived.
Ryan Curtis, April 9, 2019
We are certainly experiencing the passing of a Legend. I was fortunate enough that John and Nancy came to my wedding 36 years ago. Shelley and I also had the Blessing of spending time with John and Nancy on a Person of the Year Windstar Cruise. To this day I will always remember John being the ultimate host- kind, humble, personable and serving. John, it was an honor to know you! God Bless John, Nancy and the entire Gordon Family!

Erin Turner, April 9, 2019
My deepest sympathy to the family. It has been such an honor and blessing to have known and worked for Mr. Gordon. I had a vendor share a food show story with me that I thought characterized the family perfectly. The vendor said the show was winding down and they were putting stuff away and Mr. Gordon and his wife stopped by the booth and asked for a sample. The vendor was hesitant as he was tired and ready to be done, but he brought the food back out and put together a sample for the two of them. They chatted with him a bit, thanked him and left. Afterwards, a neighboring vendor pointed out how special it was that John Gordon had stopped at his booth for a sample. He had no idea it was them as they never said their names; they were so humble. It made a big impact on that vendor.
Alicia Sinner, April 9, 2019
For the last 20 years, I have been working for a company that cares. Through a steady paycheck, flexible work hours and good benefits, it has helped me raise my family, and never asked me to choose between the two. I will be forever grateful to John Gordon and his family for GFS, a company that cares.
Tim Weaver, GFS, April 9, 2019
John was always pleasant and fun to serve. He would come into the print center to have their Christmas cards and envelopes imprinted. He always had a story. A contagious smile and a laugh to go with it. He always had time to say hello and shake your hand.
It has been a pleasure and a privilege to say that I worked for John Gordon, Sr.
His smiling face will be missed around the campus of Gordon Food Service.
My prayers are for the family that God will give them comfort during this time.

My prayers and condolences to the Gordon Family . The culture he and the family worked to create for generations is lasting and evident everyday in the character of the individuals I get to work with. So I’m a big guy in height and waistline. Back in January 2019 I was in the elevator with John at Home Office. John looks at me and says “If our store customers have appetites as big as yours, our annual sales would look really good!”
Even in his final months he worked hard to put a smile on our faces. Thanks for the memory, John! 🙂
