Position Summary:
The position is responsible for managing and overseeing the distribution operations function at the assigned Gordon Restaurant Market facilities to ensure a positive and productive work environment exists. This role is also accountable for the efforts of the warehouse line level employees and their individual functions in support of their efforts to serve Gordon Restaurant Market customers and to manage organization resources.
Essential Functions:
Assess development potential of staff; ability to explain philosophies and /or demonstrate skills and determine who can demonstrate skills, which develop the knowledge level of staff.
Collaborate with the department supervisors utilizing the Professional Development Program to identify and develop future warehouse leaders.
Ensure GFS Culture and Climate are addressed in the strategic plan and that strategy discussion and decisions include how changes will impact the GFS Culture and Cornerstone Values, focusing on performance management.
Serve as a resource to individual department supervisors and warehouse staff. Creates an environment that stimulates an interest in achievement, creates opportunities and an expectation for teamwork. Encourages staff in departmental and individual efforts to include listening, recognizing needs and committing resources to meet staff needs and continuous improvement activities.
Interviews, hires, trains, and retains Distribution Center staff. Conducts performance monitoring of staff, initiating follow through with disciplinary action and termination in consultation with Human Resources when appropriate for the department. Mentors, motivates, and develops staff and acts as a role model and resource to them.
Able to define expectations, monitor performance of staff, provide positive and constructive feedback concerning performance levels.
Collaborates with Warehouse Manager to review policies and procedures and department supervisors and their staff to develop creative plans for systems and procedures that will improve customer service, safety, efficiency, accuracy, product care, sanitation, and employee morale.
Demonstrate ability in distribution management understanding and implementing warehousing systems, maximizing efficiency in product flow, and distribution technology to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness.
Audit the building maintenance records to ensure that all material handling equipment, refrigeration systems, and general building and grounds are maintained and cleaned properly and on schedule. Conduct periodic “spot checks” for cleanliness, orderliness and maintenance, communicating findings to the appropriate department.
Ensure our Operational focus and action plans are directly aligned with the strategy and supporting Department plans to have capable, committed people in all core positions and to have a succession plan for all key leadership roles.
Ability to assess accurately reasons for past distribution and warehouse costs, assess external and internal factors that affect a future budget, and project future costs that will result in an accurate budget; ability to assess reasons for actual cost overages vs. budgeted costs and develop strategies to reduce costs so that actual costs are under or equal forecasted budget.
Assess distribution and warehouse systems, determine methods and changes in routing and product flow which will result in continuous decrease of costs in relation to cases shipped.
Collaborate with the transportation department on route placement plans to maximize warehouse efficiencies and transit/delivery departure requirements.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
A minimum of 5-7 years previous experience in a management role; 2-3 years being in a senior role
Must have management competencies including strategic planning, budgeting, organizational skills and exceptional communication skills
Ability to communicate in an effective and professional manner that provides everyone with an opportunity to succeed and exceed our expectations in personal and customer satisfaction.
Must be courteous, motivated, flexible, open minded, a visionary, enthusiastic, encouraging, and able to delegate responsibilities.
An understanding of the food distribution or a related industry would be an asset.
