So is keeping them. With a labor shortage still bearing down on the foodservice industry, effective training and development can create a happier and stronger team.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s part of upskilling, a buzzword that speaks to growing your valuable employees by showing the opportunities and challenging them to achieve more. It aims to reduce costly turnover, service gaps and staff shortages in your dining operation.<\/p>\n<h3>The value of training and development<\/h3>\n<p>The first step to retaining workers is through training and development. It\u2019s an ongoing process, lasting for the entire employee life cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Why does it matter? Studies have shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amdocs.com\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-09\/Reskilling_Survey_Sept_2021_FINAL.pdf\">64% of workers leave citing a lack of growth opportunities<\/a>. A Work Institute report cites this as the No. 1 reason for quitting 11 years in a row.<\/p>\n<p>Here are three steps to creating training and development programs:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Personalize a plan for each employee<\/strong><br \/>This is non-negotiable! No two employees are alike, so training and development must be individualized.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Talk to team members about their interests and goals.<\/li>\n<li>Match each person&#8217;s interests to available roles or skill gaps in your organization.<\/li>\n<li>Identify interest in succession planning for leadership roles.<\/li>\n<li>Have them own the plan and its progress.<\/li>\n<li>Revisit the plan and check progress regularly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Create clear job descriptions<\/strong><br \/>Again, every job has its own responsibilities, so spell out how every role functions in your organization.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clearly state competencies, responsibilities and qualifications.<\/li>\n<li>Use this as a starting point to communicate expectations.<\/li>\n<li>Enable employees to see what skills they need or steps to take for growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Offer defined training<\/strong><br \/>Establish a way to achieve the competencies stated in job descriptions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use industry partners and associations for training resources. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Train managers to prioritize staff development.<\/li>\n<li>Budget for the cost of training:\n<ul>\n<li>Find grants and scholarships &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Allocate time
