The FDA updates the Food Code every four years, and it guides public health officials and retailers as the FDA\u2019s \u201cbest advice for a uniform system of provisions that address the safety and protection of food offered at retail and in food service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been several major Food Code changes since the previous edition: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sesame has been declared as a major food allergen, effective at the start of 2023. It becomes the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gfs.com\/es-us\/ideas\/sesame-be-9th-labeled-allergen\/\">ninth labeled food allergen<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Written notification is required about major food allergens as ingredients in unpackaged food.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Major food allergens must be labeled in bulk food from which consumers self-serve.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clarification of time and temperature cooking requirements for intact meats.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Revision of the definition of intact meat:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A cut of whole muscle meat that has not undergone comminution, mechanical tenderization, vacuum tumbling with solutions, reconstruction, cubing or pounding.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guidance for food donations, to help reduce food waste as part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/White-House-National-Strategy-on-Hunger-Nutrition-and-Health-FINAL.pdf\">Biden-Harris Administration\u2019s National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health<\/a>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food that is stored, prepared, packaged, displayed and labeled in accordance to law and the FDA Food Code may be offered for donation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allowance of pet dogs in outdoor dining areas, if approved by the regulatory authority. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Food Code is a model for upholding food safety standards, but each state can determine which edition of the Food Code to adopt.
